BEALS, AGED BUSINESS MAN DEAD ----------------------- Edward P. Beals, senior member of the big hardware firm of Beals & Com- pany, died at the family residence, No. 214 Delaware Avenue, yesterday after- noon at 1:30 o'clock. The deceased had reached his 82d year on March 17th, last. He had en- joyed good health until a week ago, when he contracted a slight cold, which forced him to remain at home. He was about the house Monday, when his con- dition became such that he was con- fined to his bed. From that time he de- clined rapidly, and two days ago pneu- monia developed and was the direct cause of his death. Mr. Beals began his business career in 1836 as a clerk in the hardware store of S. F. Pratt & Company. Six years later he became a member of the con- cern and from that time he was in con- stant charge of the business. During all the years that Mr. Beals was con- nected with the concern he never seemed to have lost any of his business abilities, but his principal object was advancing the interests and prominence of his industry. Mr. Beals was said to be the oldest man in the hardware bus- iness in Buffalo. On account of the increasing trade of the firm the business operated by Pratt & Beals at Main and Swan streets was moved to Nos. 44-50 Terrace, where larger quarters and greater facilities were established. This is the present headquarters of the business. The partnership of Pratt & Beals was continued until 1886. In that year the firm was reorganized, and became known as Beals & Brown. By the death of Mr. Brown, in 1893, the firm underwent another change, giving it the name by which it is now known. Mr. Beals was born in Canandaigua, N.Y. His early education was received in the Buffalo Military Academy, and subsequently in a private school at Canandaigua. He was a recognized ex- pert in the iron and steel business, and always ranked high as an enterprising and public-spirited citizen. The younger members of the firm of Beals & Com- pany are Pascal P. Beals, Charles P. Rogers, Eugene J. McCarthy and Sam- uel C. Pratt. Mr. Beals was married in 1848 to Mary Lorans of Pittsburg, who died in 1888. He is survived by Pascal P., Catherine L., Julia L., and Grace R. Beals. The funeral will be held from the family residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be at Forest Lawn. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access the more of our information about Erie County, N.Y., by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ny/erie/ ===========================================================================
