         Moravia, Jan. 3 - WILLIAM C. TRIPP, 86, veteran
       of the Civil War, died early Sunday morning at his
       home on Congress Street. He was born in Moravia and
       was the son of PHENA COLE and CORYDON TRIPP. For
       many years he resided in the Town of Venice. For
       the past 13 years he resided at the place of his
       death. MR. TRIPP is survived by his widow, MRS. LUCY
       COVEY TRIPP; a sister, MRS. ANNA E. OGDEN of Locke
       and by two nephews, S. B. BACKMAN of Weedsport and
       LUTHER BACKMAN of Brooklyn.
         Funeral services were conducted at 1 o'clock Tues-
       day afternoon in the Baptist Church. Interment was
       in the Scipio Center Cemetery. Ritualistic services
       were conducted by members of the Masonic Lodge of
       Scipio and by members of the John A. Thomas Circle,
       Women of the G.A.R.
         MR. TRIPP was a member of Company I, 111th New
       York Volunteer Infantry. A portion of the company
       was organized in this village and the remainder in
       Auburn. WILLIAM HENRY BAKER of the town of Moravia,
       who died last Monday in Ithaca, and whose funeral
       services were conducted Thursday in that city, was
       also a member of Company I. Less than one week
       separated the death of the comrades in arms.
         MR. TRIPP, with other members of his regiment,
       were captured at Harper's Ferry by STONEWALL JACKSON.
       Later they were exchanged and sent to Washington,
       D.C., for active duty. Thereafter they were sent
       to Centreville, Va., where considerable skirmishing
       was had with GENERAL MOSBY. MR. TRIPP participated
       in the battles of Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsyl-
       vania, Cold Harbor, Shady Grove and other major
       conflicts.
