MR. THOMAS BELL. The deceased was a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland, and until his removal to America, was a successful farmer of Westfield, near Glasgow. The encroachment of pulmonary disease compelled a change of climate; and in October 1884 he came to Western North Carolina. He purchased a farm on Haw Creek about five miles from Ashville, which he improved with the characteristic industry and judgment of his countrymen, as long as his fail- ing health would permit and gradually yielded to the ravages of consumption. Of MR. BELL personally, we know but little. He was a good man in the truest sense of the term, a devoted husband, a kind father and a devout christian; a member of the Presbyterian church, his attachment to which was illustrated by almost his last wish that he be buried close to the walls of the "Kirk;" which request was complied with. The funeral services were conducted at the late residence of the deceased by the Rev. Mr. Gammon; and the remains were intered in the Presbyterian church yard in this place, attended by all the Scotchmen of the city and vicinity, the three little sons of MR. BELL being present as chief mourners. MR. BELL leaves a widow and seven children, all of whom are the recipents of sincere sym- pathy in this hour of their bereavement and in this land of strangers. ===========================================================================
