After an illness which followed an attack of influenza a year ago, JOHN LANG, Stearns county register of deeds since 1910, died last evening at 6:30 at his home here, 627 Eighth avenue south. He was 57 years of age. Mr. LANG was in ill health following an attack of influenza in January of last year and was taken to the Pokegoma sanitarium near Pine City the lat- ter part of June where he was confined for five months during which time he submitted to two oper- ations. He was brought to his home here about two weeks ago and seemed to be recovering when he suf- fered a relapse Friday noon which resulted in his death a few hours later. Mrs. LANG and his four children were with him at death. At a meeting to be held Monday morning, the Stearns county board of county commissioners will name a successor to the office of Mr. LANG. BORN AT RICHMOND He was born at Richmond, the son of Mr. and Mrs. JOHN LANG, SR., and at the age of 13 years his father died leaving his mother dependent upon the efforts of the son. Mr. LANG was handicapped in addition by the loss of his left arm, which was amputated after an accident while working on a farm when he was 10 years of age. He was able to perform chores and do other work, however, and edu- cated himself, graduating from the grade schools at Richmond, and later entered the State Teachers col- lege here, from which he graduated in 1905. He taught school at Rockville three years, at Watkins one year and at Avon one year. During this time he was becoming pupularly known throughout the county and in 1910 was elected for the first time to the office of register of deeds, a position of trust which he has held until his death. Mr. LANG was married to ELIZABETH MIMBACH, a native of Sibley county who received her education at Arlington, Minn., before going to St. Martin with her parents at the age of 19 years. Their marriage took place August 30, 1901 at St. Martin. LEAVES FOUR CHILDREN Besides the widow there are four children, MILDRED, JEROME, JOHN, JR., and JEAN MARIE, the youngest six years old. There also is one sister, Mrs. SUSAN KIRCHKNAPF, who lives in Idaho. Mr. LANG'S father came to America in 1833 and car- ried on his trade as a shoemaker in Portsmouth, O., until 1857 when he came to St. Cloud going to Rich- mond a year later where he conducted a custom busi- ness for many years. His later days were spent at St. Martin where he died in 1883. Mrs. LANG died some years ago, almost 90 years of age. The funeral services will be held Monday morning at St. Mary's church here at nine o'clock and burial will follow in the family lot of Calvary cemetery. Members of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Court 401, The Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph society and the B. P. O. E., of which the register of deeds was a member will be present at the funeral service. ==========================================================================
