PEOPLES, pioneer resident of Detroit Lakes, and for years judge of probate of Becker county, died in a hospital at Fargo Wednesday. The family were among the original residents of Detroit Lakes, his father having operated a flour mill on the old Red River Ox Cart trail. Judge PEOPLES was born at Detroit Lakes Oct. 16, 1891. In his youth, he piloted boats that operated from Pelican Lake to Detroit Lakes. He was graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1910 as president of his class and attended St. Paul College of Law. Judge PEOPLES married FLORENCE A. AMUNDSEN in St. Paul March 29, 1913. Immediately afterwards, he went into business in Detroit Lakes, and was successively an automobile dealer and a salesman for St. Paul Corrugating Co. Judge PEOPLES served two years as deputy sheriff of Becker County, and two terms on the City Council. He became judge of probate in 1945. He also had served on the Detroit Lakes Fire Department many years, beginning in 1914. A member of the Becker Fair Board, he retired in 1944 after having served as chairman and in other offices. He was a county commissioner from 1930 to 1934. He was active also in the state county fair associa- tion, and was manager and a member of the Detroit Lakes City Band a number of years. Active in the Becker County Historical Society, he had been president and had held other offices. Other interests had been the City Air Port Commission and the Oak Grove Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Detroit Lakes Sportsmens Club; the Masonic Lodge; Rotary Club and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His wife died in 1958 and he leaves four married daughters. The funeral will occur at Detroit Lakes Saturday. =========================================================================
