CHASE, EDITOR, DIES Brother of Former State Auditor Succumbs After Prolonged Ill Health ROE G. CHASE, editor of the Anoka Herald 27 years, and a brother of RAY P. CHASE, former state auditor, died Monday evening at his home in Anoka. He had been in ill health several years, having never completely recovered from an attack of influenza in 1918, and a recent return of the same illness was responsible for his death. He would have been 53 Friday. Mr. CHASE was born in Anoka, received his public school education there, and attended the University of Minnesota. In 1903 he purchased the Anoka Herald and edited that publication up until the time of his death. He had an active interest in state politics and his paper always served as an organ of conserva- tive Republicanism, but he never was a candidate for public office. He was a delegate to numerous state conventions of the Republican party. He was commissioned a major in the home guard dur- ing the World war after he tried to enlist without success, because of his age, in the regular army. When forest fires swept the Moose Lake area in 1918, he led a detachment of the home guard in fighting the flames and at that time contracted influenza. He wrote on matters of public interest for a number of newspapers, published some fiction and poetry, and was the author of "With the Colors," a book recounting the work of Anoka soldiers in the World war. On the editorial page of the Herald he printed a weekly rhyme under the caption "Tom Talks" and never deviated from this custom during the entire time he edited the paper. That earned him the title of the "Bard of Rum River." Mr. CHASE was very active in the recent political campaign on behalf of his brother, RAY CHASE, who was defeated as Republican candidate for governor. He was a nephew of Judge ARTHUR E. GIDDINGS of Anoka county district court. He was married in 1917 to CHRISTABELLE ABLITT of St. Paul, and is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs. C. E. CHASE, and two brothers, ROSS W. and RAY P. CHASE, all of Anoka. Funeral services have not yet been arranged. ==========================================================================
