He came originally from the vicinity of the St. Clair river, and was first known here, many years ago, as an employe on some of the steamboats of that day. He sailed the steamers "Little Erie," "Gen. Scott," "Fairport" and "John Owen." He ceased sailing about 1850, being then largely interested in the Cleveland, Sandusky and Toledo lines of steamers. At the time of his death he was one of the largest stock- holders in the Detroit & Cleveland line.
