BURNS Was In Line For Promotion It was while returning from his third trip over the road that WILLIAM J. BURNS, of Detroit, acting fireman on the east-bound Pere Marquette train, met his death. MR. BURNS, though only 23 years of age, was a locomotive engineer in the Detroit yards, the youngest of the corps, and showed great ability in his chosen work. He had been in the employ of the company since his fifteenth year, and it was with a view to giving him a run as engineer on the line between Detroit and Grand Rapids that he was sent out temporarily as a fireman. He had made one trip to Grand Ledge and one to Grand Rapids and was returning from a second run to the latter city when he was killed. The deceased lived with his mother, MRS. CATHERINE BURNS, at 647 Howard street, and the first news of the wreck re- ceived by her Saturday night simply announced that her son was missing. It was not till yesterday morning that the suspense of waiting ended in a sad certaintly. Deceased was a member of Wayne lodge No. 104, K.P. He is survived by his mother, one brother and five sisters, JOHN E. BURNS, Miss JULIA BURNS, Mrs. H. A. HOEFLEIR, Mrs. H. C. CALDWELL, Mrs. W. E. KRAUSE, all of Detroit, and Mrs. HENRY MOORE, of Brighton, Mich. Arrangements for the funeral are not complete. ===============================================================================
