A. T. Andreas & Co., Chicago - 1883 [562-563] W. W. CAMPFIELD, of the firm of W. W. CAMPFIELD & Co., is a native of St. Clair County, and was born in Port Huron November 1, 1841. He grew up and attended school here. Upon the breaking-out of the rebellion, when only nineteen years of age, he enlisted in the First United States Artillery, and was in active service in the Army of the Potomac, when this department was in command of McClellan. He was in eleven engagements and was promoted from private to Sergeant in the regular army, and was offered a commission but declined it; served three years after his return from the service. He entered the employ of HENRY McMORAN, and was with him until January, 1878, when he and Mr. JONES succeeded him in their present business. They have a large wholesale trade in flour and feed. They have the exclusive sale of flour of McMORAN'S mills; also have a large coal trade. Mr. CAMPFIELD has been twice married. His first wife was Miss ANNA VANCE, of this county. She left one son, FRANK. His present wife was Miss LUCY WHITCOMB, a native of New Hampshire.
