L. Polk & Co., 1873 [165] - CRAWFORD'S QUARRY - Crawford's Quarry is the name of a village having a population of about 200, and situated on the shore of Lake Huron between Presque Isle Harbor and Cheboygan. It is in Rogers township, Presque Isle county, 2 miles east of Rogers City the county seat, 180 miles above Standish and about 300 from Detroit. It has a good dock and a saw mill, and does a heavy business in lumber, lath, cord wood, cedar poles, telegraph poles, etc. The W. U. Telegraph, and A. M. U. Express companies have established offices here. The country lying back from the lake is mostly beech and maple land, with some pine and hemlock. The soil is a kind of reddish loam mixed with clay. The county is mostly settled by Germans and Poles, who have availed themselves of the government homestead law, and they are rapidly improving the country. Within the last two years about a thousand families have moved in, and still the immigration continues. Crawford's Quarry has communication with Detroit by boat every other day during the season of navigation.
