He was born in Chicago Oct. 18, 1905. He married Kathrine Holub and she preceded him in death. He then married Elizabeth Harkenrider Aug. 13, 1949, She survives. He was a member of the Ludington and Hart Chapters of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He came to Pentwater in 1939 from Chicago. He was lighthouse keeper at Little Point Sauble until it closed in 1954 and then was the lighthouse keeper at Big Point Sauble until his retirement in 1964. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Shirley Vavrina of Chicago and Henrietta Snider of Hart; two sons, James Harkenrider of Carson City, Nev., and Gerald Harkenrider of Marysville, Calif.; one sister, Marie Schultz of Chicago; two brothers, Charles Laurel of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Walter Laurel of Huntington, Ill., and two grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tate-Weaver Funeral Home in Hart with Rev. Jack Kracklan officiating. Interment will be in the Hart Cemetery with military rites.
