D. of the 20th Regt. of Iowa Vols. Personally appeared before the undersigned duly authorized to administer oats within and for said County, William Laycock, aged 76 years, whose P.O. is Le Claire, County of Scott, State of Iowa, who being duly sworn, states in relation to said claim as follows to-wit: That he has been a resident of said Town of Le Claire fo the 34 years last past, that he was well acquainted with the family of the above named Soldier, that the Affiant and his father being both from the same Country (England) visited quite frequently at his fathers house so long as the father lived in Le Claire and therefore had ample opportunity of knowing and hereby emphatically testifies to the fact that the said Soldier was previous to his enlistment a stout healthy able bodied man, My recollection is that that he enlisted in Davenport but was Mustered into the Service at Clinton Iowa, and that after his return from the army he was troubled with Camp Diarrhea and Rheumatism, That the Affiant was then Clerk in a Drug store kept by one (remainder of line on darkened fold and illegible) recollection of filling prescriptions for the said Soldier for the above complaints between the years 1864 and 1867 when he went West and I lost track of him but have heard that he has not wholy regained his former wo***ted health, in fact it is more than probable that the filling of said prescriptions would have escaped my recollecton but for the fact of my taking more than ordinary interest in the boy owing to the intimate relations existing between the family of the Affiant and that of his father. William Laycock J.P (his signature) Sworn to and subscribed before me on the 16th day of July, 1891, and I hereby certify that the contents of this affidavit was fully made known to the affiant before signing and I have no interest in this claim or its prosecution.
