T. Sands Completely Wrecked, Loss Is Estimated at $30,000 Ludington Firemen Respond To Call for Assistance, Origin of Fire Unknown PENTWATER, Mich., May 13. - Fire, starting from an unknown source, completely destroyed the grocery store owned by G. T. Sands of this village at an early hour this morning. The damage is estimated at $30,000, part of which was covered by insurance. The flames were discovered about 3 o'clock this morning by trainmen in the Pere Marquette railroad yards across he lake from the store and they spread the alarm by blowing whistles on the engines. Volunteer firemen and all of Pent- water was quickly aroused but by the time the fire fighters reached the scene the entire interior of the building was a mass of flames. It is thought the fire started in a store-room where bar- rels of oil were kept and from there spread to the grocery department and to the second floor of the building where large stocks of groceries, hardware and paints for summer trade had recently been stored. The building itself was a two-story frame structure that was erected in 1866 and proved easy prey to the flames. The village firemen, realizing the impossibil- ity of saving the burning building, put forth every effort toward keeping the flames from spreading to the adjoining brick building which housed the dry goods and hardware store, also owned by Mr. Sands. Shortly after 8 o'clock this morning a call was sent in to Ludington for assis- tance and Chief Nathan Joseph and H. L. Williams together with members of the Fourth ward department responded. When the Ludington firemen arrived the building had been reduced to a heap of smoldering ruins. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
