A spectacular fire brought hundreds of people to the scene. The school was a two-story frame building, constructed in 1880. The old fashioned steeple which was its distinguishing feature stood to the last, a flaming, smoking torch, then top- pled, carrying the remains of the roof and second stor with it. It was one of the oldest schools in Oceana County and was a village landmark. A defec- tive chimney was believed to have been the cause. The fire started shortly before school opened. The high school students, whose classrooms were on the second floor, were in their seats or mill- ing about in the hall. The grades started school 15 minutes later, so most of the younger children wee still playing in the yard. Raymond Robertson, 12 years old, on his way to school, noticed the flames on the roof and gave the alarm. Only a few desks wee saved, but other portable equipment, and most of the books from the excel- lent library were saved, being carried out by parents and students. Loss was estimated at $50,- 000, and insurance covered only $21,000. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
