              At Newaygo during a sham fight last Saturday
            afternoon, DANIEL VAN LIEW was fatally injured
            by the premature discharge of a cannon. He
            died the following day, leaving a wife and
            three sons in very poor circumstances. Gen.
            ALGER, one of the speakers of the occassion,
            was present and immediately after the acci-
            dent, headed a subscription list with $50.
