SAM was hunting with his boy CARL, 16, and STANLEY BURR, a neigh- bor, near Stiles swamp just south of the Lake-Newaygo county line on M-37. He was alone when he was hit by a bullet from the gun of DARRELL AIKEN, 17, of Walker- ville, and died shortly. AIKEN said he sho at a noise in the brush. AIKEN and the party with him took the body to the sheriff's office at Baldwin where he report- ed the accident to the Lake Coun- ty Sheriff B. E. BROMLEY. Meanwhile, CARL ans STANLEY BURR, knew nothing of the accident until late in the day when Con- servation officers notified them of the death. State police transferred Mr. AIKEN to White Cloud where he waived examination in Justice WELLS BRANCH'S court on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He was bound over to the December term of Circuit court. Bond was set at $1000. Funeral services for SAM SCHOTTS were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Crandell & Ensing funeral chapel at Fremont with Rev. VERNON PAULSON officiating. Burial was in Lincoln cemetery. SAM was a lifelong resident of Lincoln township. He was born May 11, 1905. He was married to RUTH ELMAN 24 years ago. They made their home on the old SCHOTTS homesead, formerly own- ed by his brother, FRED SCHOTTS. He was employed by Gerber Pro- ducts company for the past eight years. He enjoyed the hobbies of hunting and fishing. He previously lost his left arm in a gun mishap. It was SAM, who two years ago, helped Sheriff HART and State Police capture HARRY STEVENS. HARRY had been hunted 12 hours after attempting to kill MARTHA ZACHARIAS of White Cloud by shoot- ing her. STEVENS appeared at the SCHOTTS home, asking for food. SAM phoned Sheriff HART and his wife stalled in preparing a meal. STEVENS surrendered after a gun battle on the SCHOTTS farm. Surviving are his wife, RUTH, six sons and daughter, DALE of Muskegon, KENNETH in Korea, ROBERT of Lousiana and CARL, ARTHUR, JERRY and KATHLEEN, all at home; three sisters, Mrs. WALTER GRAVES of White Cloud, Mrs. CLAUDE HENRY of Fremont and Mrs. GRAHAM of Grant. ===========================================================================
