Jealousy among the towns of Newaygo, White Cloud, and Fremont as to the county seat has caused this peculiar situation, which came to a head yesterday afternoon when the county supervisors voted to borrow $1,000 - as much as the law allows them - to start the construction. More will be voted when Father Time makes it lawful. White Cloud got the county seat away from Newaygo in April, 1910, by promising to furnish the county with a court house for a period of seven years. This building has been provided. However, White Cloud did not agree to build a jail with its own money. So the county spent $270 in the con- struction of a lockup. Within a year state authorities condemned this edifice and since that time Newaygo counties prisoners have been sojourning in the Mecosta county jail at the expense of the Newaygo county tax- payers. Subsequently the proposition to bond the county for $10,000 for a jail and sheriff's residence has been twice downed by the voters. Fourteen out of the twenty- four townships of the county gave a majority in favor of the bond, but the territories adjacent to and in- cluding the city of Fremont and the village of Newaygo, where the big vote is, went overwhelmingly against the bond. The Newaygo voters were put out over the loss of the county seat to White Cloud. Now comes to light the reason why Fremont has opposed it. Supervisor JOSEPH GERBER of Fremont yesterday introduced a resolution to submit to the voters the removal of the county seat to Fremont. The supervisors defeated it 19 to 7. Immediately following the defeat of the resolution Supervisor AUBLE of Barton township introduced the reso- lution to borrow $1,000 for the foundation of the jail and sheriff's residence which is to be constructed on the courthouse site, a pretty little grove covering a square in the village of White Cloud. It carried by the tight squeak of 13 to 12. The majority of the supervisors want the county seat to remain at White Cloud because it is the center of the county geographically and is a junction point of the Pere Marquette railroad. Therefore they propose to have a jail and sheriff's residence even if they have to do it piecemeal. ==========================================================================
