DAVID HOSTCHLETER, 32, an em- ploye of the home operated by JOHN GARRISON, was burned about the hands and face aiding fire- men in evacuating the patients. EMMA HALLER, 35, assistant man- ager, turned in the alarm. She said she detected smoke following an explosion of some kind in the basement. Firemen from White Cloud, Fre- mont and Grant battled the flames but were hampered by snow and a stiff wind. The blaze was reported still uncontrolled at 1 p.m. Friday. Sheriff ROBERT D. HART of Newaygo county said that only prompt action on the part of the attendants and firemen averted injury to the patients who were taken to private homes here. No immediate estimate of the loss was available. GARRISON had operated the home since 1939. No other buildings were threatened. One of those rescued was Mrs. MARY HUNT who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. ==========================================================================
