The dead were idnetified as WILLIAM GARNETT, about 62, of Baldwin and WILLIAM TAYLOR, about 60, of Grand Rapids, both Negroes. The sheriff said the Chesapeake and Ohio freight crew apparently was unaware of the accident, which occurred about 7:30 last night, and kept going. A second freight train crew observed the wreckage shortly before 1 a.m. and relayed the news to a railroad dispatcher, who phoned officers. HART said the car was swept down the tracks about two miles from the scene of the accident at a crossing about two miles northwest of White Cloud. GARNETT'S body was found about two miles from the scene of the collision and that of his companion was located about three-fourths of a mile from the crossing, HART said. GERNETT apparently was killed outright. TAYLOR died in Gerber hospital at Fremont early today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ludington Daily News January 21, 1950 2 Are Killed at White Cloud Baldwin - WILLIAM GARNETT, 64-year-old Baldwin Route 1 carpenter, and WILLIAM TAYLOR, 60, of Grand Rapids and former Baldwin resident were killed in an accident on M-37 at 7:30 p.m. Friday when their car struck a northbound C & O freight train two miles north of White Cloud. Mr. GARNETT was dead when police officers arrived at 1 a.m. after they had been called by crew members of another freight train. Mr. TAYLOR died shortly after being taken to Gerber hospital in Fremont. Members of the crew of the train, which was enroute to Ludington when the accident occurred, were unaware of the accident which happened during a heavy snow storm. Sheriff ROBERT HART of White Cloud said the accident occurred at an angle crossing, scene of several previous accidents. Stephens funeral home in Scottville is in charge of funeral arrangements for Mr. GARNETT. ==========================================================================
