- Newaygo County -

Newaygo county is located in the west-central area of Michigan. It was formed April 1, 1840 from Mackinac and Oceana counties, and was attached to Kent and Ottawa counties until organization on January 27, 1851. It is bordered by Mason county (northwest), Lake county (north), Osceola county, (northeast), Mecosta county (east), Montcalm county (southeast), Kent county (south), Muskegon county, (southwest) and Oceana county (west).

The county has an area of 862 square miles of which 48 square miles is covered with water. It has more than 230 natural lakes and the total length of the county's rivers and streams is more than 350 miles. Hardy Dam, constructed in 1929, is the largest earthen dam east of the Mississippi River.

Newaygo county is divided into 23 townships. The largest city is Fremont and the county seat is at White Cloud.
