BIRD and a group of 20 deputy sheriffs from Newaygo, Muskegon and Oceana counties. The protestors, counted by police at about 400, rushed the officers twice before they were driven off by a tear gas bomb. One man was stunned but apparently not seriously hurt when he was struck on the head by one of the officers. Three men arrested gave their names as JOHN W. ROSE, 59, of Croton township; JOHN BABCOCK, 29, of Hesperia, and JOHN CASPER, 25, of Scottville. They were held in the county jail without charge. The fighting broke out when the group, gathered in front of the court house to protest agains the sael, suddenly rushed the officers in an attempt to break it up. ==========================================================================
