His parents, James and Jane (Christian) Spencer, were natives of that country, where the father died; the mother subsequently came to America, and now resides with a son in Sherman Township. James was 22 years of age when he came to America. He lived in Canada four years, and came to Michigan in the fall of 1858. He spent four years in St. Clair County, and in the fall of 1862 came to Newaygo County and purchased 80 acres of partly improved land, where he now resides; 70 acres are in a fair state of cultivation. In January, 1859, he was married, in St. Clair County, to Ruth A., daughter of John C. and Anna Ostrander, and they have had eight children: James, Edward O., Edith M., John, Alexis, Charles F. and an infant. One child died in infancy. Mr. Spencer in politics is a Republican. ==========================================================================
