HILLER Killed in Action Reported on July 19 as missing in action, RICHARD E. HILLER, electrician's mate 3/c, 21 years old, of Muskegon, was killed in action on June 8, 1944, the navy department has notified his sister, MRS. HERBERT SCHAEFER, 2090 Morton avenue. MR. HILLER was serving on the destroyer escort Rich, sunk off the French coast by enemy action. A buddy of HILLER'S from Bay City contacted by MRS. SCHAEFER, said that the Muskegon man was instantly killed. His body was not recovered. Known to his friends as BEN, MR. HILLER, born in Detroit on January 9, 1923, spent his childhood in Brohman and was graduated from Baldwin high school in 1942. Since then he made his home with his sister, MRS. Schaefer, and was employed by the George Morrell corpor- ation when he enlisted in January 1943. After boot training at Great Lakes, Ill., he was sent to Norfolk, Va., and assigned to sea duty. Surviving are his sister, MRS> SCHAEFER, of Muskegon; three brothers, CHESTER HILLER, Detroit; DONALD B. HILLER, F 1/c, serving on a minesweeper in the Atlantic, and ENSIGN WILLIAM HILLER, at navy air station, Atlanta, Ga.; and his grandmother, MRS. MARY CROSS, Muskegon.
