It is quite dilapidated, and is unfit for the use to which it is put. It has connected with it, a farm of 358 acres. There were no insane persons in close confinement here. There was quite a number of old persons, and some of their rooms were not very tidy. The other parts of the house were in as fair a state of cleanliness as could be expected in view of the conveniences and rickety state of the building. =========================================================================== Abstract of the Reports Superintendents of the Poor State of Michigan, 1891 [41] Monroe. - The poorhouse is located in Monroe township. It is a two story brick building with basement. Facilities for bathing are two bath rooms and tubs, one in keeper's and one in pauper's depart- ment, well supplied with cold and warm water. Buildings are warmed by three furnaces, one in keeper's and two in pauper's department, also four stoves for coal and wood. Ventilation is by means of flues from basement to roof. Treatment of paupers is good, by moral suasion. No corporal punishement. Food consists of wheat bread, salt pork, fresh meats occasionally through the summer, with soups and vegetables of all kinds raised on the farm, fresh meats and fish during the winter, and plenty of milk at all times. Meals are served three times per day. Roast turkey, chicken and extras are served on all holidays. Clothing for males in summer is of cottonade, and in winter cotton underwear with other suitable clothing as needed to make them comfor- table. For the females cotton denims and prints in summer and flannel underwear in winter. The sick are under the special care of the mat- ron and a physician by the year and paid by the visit. Nurses are kept constantly with the sick when needed and food given as prescribed by the physician. We have rooms where the insane can be cared for provided they are not excitable. The idiotic give but little trouble as they are in most cases capable of caring for themselves. When we have children capable of being taught a lady teacher is employed. =========================================================================== Page 142 Biennial Report of the State Board of Corrections and Charities 1907-1908 MONROE Infirmary three miles from Monroe. A large two story brick build- ing, well planned and equipped for its purpose; is heated with steam and well ventilated; has toilet facilities and sewerage; the tubs and closets are much worn and the water pressure is inadequate for best service. The furnishing is scant and rooms and halls have a barren appearance. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
