She has been in the field from her early years, and has won the respect of newspaper- men throughout the state. A native of Hartford, Michigan, Mrs. DeRyke was born in 1893, the daughter of LeRoy and Etta (Huntley) Johnson. The family had long been engaged in the printing field. Her father bought the Miland "Leader" in 1912, and her mother was a leader in another activity of importance to the city, as organizer and president of the Miland Women's Club. Mrs. DeRyke received her early education in the public elementary and high schools of Kalamazoo and Milan, then entered Michigan State Normal College to prepare herself for a career in teaching. She graduated there in 1915, but the publishing field had by now exerted its influence and had proved more appealing to her than pedagogy. Accordingly, she became associated with her father in the publication of the Milan "Leader," which he had acquired three years previously. Training herself in all aspects of newspaper production and organization, she became a vital part of the paper's management during the next twenty-five years, and became its publisher in 1941. In the same year she became the publisher of the Dundee "Reporter," published in that city, but she sold this paper in 1946. In 1950 she disposed of the Milan "Leader" as well, bringing to a close thirty- five years of valuable service in informing the public and moulding opinion in her region of the state. Mrs. DeRyke is a member of the Milan Women's Club, which her mother was so active in launching, and she belongs also to the American Legion Auxiliary and the P. E. O. Sisterhood. She is a member of the Altrusa International Club, a professional women's group, and of the Michigan Press Association. In her religious faith, Mrs. DeRyke is a Presbyterian. Lucile Johnson became the wife of Everett DeRyke at Milan, in 1918, and they were divorced in 1942. Her present address is 29 West Main Stree, Milan. She is now society editor for the Milan "Leader" and correspondent and writer for the Toledo "Blade." =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
