Cota, farmer on section 16, Aetna Tp., was born in Carroll Co., Ohio, in 1837. His parents were born in France, emigrated to the United States and settled in the Buckeye State, where his father was drowned while laboring in the river service. Mr. Cota was in his infancy and his mother bound him to a man named Adam Hardesty. He was so very young that he lost all trace of her and does not know that he has a relative by blood on the earth. He remained with Mr. Hardesty until he was 18 years of age, when he was released from his bonds and found employment in Paulding Co., Ohio, and was there occupied for five years. In the fall of ’61 he enlisted in the 68th Ohio Inf., serving three years, and receiving honorable discharge. Leaving the army he spent a few months in Paulding Co., Ohio, and in the spring of 1866 he came to Aetna Tp. and bought 40 acres of land, which he has increased to 80 acres, with 30 under the plow. Mr. Cota was married July 4, 1867, to Isabel, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Woodcock) Shoeck, native of New York. Mrs. Cota was born Page 210: Feb. 1, 1843. of six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Cota four are living, born as follows: Rousseau was born June 10, 1868; George W., Dec. 1, 1875; Milton E., May 12, 187-; Retta E., June 30, 1881. John born Jan. 21, 1878, died Oct 10, 1879. The character and conduct of the life of Mr. Cota have been such as to secure for him the advantages always accruing to a man of upright and honorable dealing. ===========================================================================
