GAVIGAN died Saturday noon. During that time he had taken but little nourishment but his wonderfully strong constitution kept him up so that he rallied quickly and seemed hopeful even after every bad spell. The funeral which was held yesterday morning from St. Simon's church was largely attended especially by old citizens. The floral offerings were very beauti- ful and their great numbers bore eloquent testimony to the esteem with which MR. GAVIGAN was regarded. A large piece from the Epworth resorters expressed in a measure their appreciation of his many kindnesses while he has been caretaker of the resort. Father Mulvey conducted funeral services. Deceased is survived by a widow and two sons, LEONARD and OWEN, five brothers and five sisters. Of the brothers JAMES GAVIGAN and wife of Waukesha, Wis., JOHN, WILLIAM and HUGH GAVIGAN of Milwaukee were here, also his sis- ters, Miss KATIE GAVIGAN of Chicago, MRS. BUCKET of Mil- waukee and MRS. QUAIL of Mukwonago. OWEN J. GAVIGAN was born Feb. 3, 1847, in Bellshannon, county of Donnigal, Ireland. He was one of a family of 13. His parents came to America when deceased was an infant and made their home for several years near Mil- waukee. MR. GAVIGAN came to Ludington in the year of 1872. He engaged in the grocery business with John Saeger on the site now occupied by Snow's drug store. Later MR. GAVIGAN conducted it alone. About this time he and A. D. Woodward took the initiative in organizing the Ludington fire department on its present basis. MR. GAVIGAN later moved his grocery store where the Robt. Peterson meat market now stands. About 16 years ago he retired from active business in the city to a farm on the lake shore. He has occupied the position of city night watch and three years ago was appointed caretaker at Epworth which position he filled to the satisfaction of all. His life has been one of remark- able activity. ===============================================================================
