His Desperate Attempt at Suicide Proves Abortive. Marquette, August 26. - HOLZHAY, the lone Gogebic highwayman and murderer, made another attempt Monday morning at self-destruction, and he was almost success- ful. Having lost the use of his right hand in an effort to escape by overpowering the guards, and his attempt at starvation having been thwarted by the injection of food, the unruly convict tried a more efficacious means. When the guard took HOLZHAY'S breakfast to his cell he found the prisoner in a semi-conscious condition on the floor, bleeding freely from the right wrist and his hair matted with blood. A hasty examination showed that his wrist had been cut open above the radial artery, and his scalp on the crown of his head crushed to a pulp. The wounds were promptly dressed, HOLZHAY re- covered his senses during the process. In his pocket was found a blood-stained sliver of tin which had been broken from a galvanized iron bucket used in taking water to the cell. When this attempt to sever his artery, had been made, HOLZHAY had then tried to smash his brains out by butting his head against the brick wall of the cell, but the length of the room was insufficient to permit proper momentum. HOLZHAY is now in a straight jacket and for the pre- sent is incapable of inflicting further injuries upon himself. ==========================================================================
