Wednesday morning about 4 o'clock a workman employed at the Carp River furnace at Marquette ascended the stairway which leads up the side of the big stack and on the third landing, in a sheltered place, discovered the bodies of two young men who had been overcome by charcoal fumes emitted from a nearby vent hole. The place is warm, sheltered and out of the rain and it is apparent that they had climbed in there some time during the night before to get protection from the storm and sleep through till daylight. It is probable, cold and wet as they were, that they fell asleep as soon as the grateful warmth struck their bodies, and they did not notice the noxious gas which was being given out through the vent. Death probably was not long in coming, as it is claimed that it would be impossible for a man to live where they were for over an hour. Investigations carried on by a coroner at Marquette, with the aid of the Oberlin, O., police, revealed the identity of the two men. They were OSCAR J. LEWIS and JAMES B. GILMAN, the former of Calumet, and the latter of Rochester, N.Y. Both young men were students at Oberlin University and were on their way to LEWIS' home at Calumet. A telegram received from Oberlin says they left there June 29th. From appearances they were rough- ing it, catching rides on freight trains when opportun- ity offered and footing it when not as fortunate. When they reached Marquette they were practically out of funds, their total cash assets amounting to but thirty- five cents, which was in the possession of LEWIS. ==========================================================================
