A Marquette dispatch to Detroit papers says: "A small piece of spitefulness has developed here over the display of the flag at the branch state prison at half-mast in honor of the late ex-Gov. Pingree. When Gov. Bliss' order to lower the flags on all state institutions was received here, Warden Freeman was absent, so the deputy in charge placed the flag as ordered. When Free- man returned, and was informed of what had been done, it is said he angrily ordered the flag raised to the top of the staff again. "One of the last official acts of Gov. Pingree, it will be recalled, was the preferring of charges against Warden Freeman, which were later investi- gated by a legislative committee. The latter's report partially exonerated Freeman. -------------------------------------------------- Since the above was put in type Warden Freeman has caused to be published in the Marquette Mining Journal a complete statement of the affair, which places him in a different light regarding the mat- ter. The flag has been at half mast with the ex- ception of a few hours, and that without any in- tent of discourtesy on the warden's part. The dispatch was evidently premature and wrong. ==========================================================================
