The L'Anse Sentinel
Saturday, August 29, 1891

              A farmer fifteen miles southwest of Marquette in
            crossing Masey's creek, discovered the body of a man
            hanging to a tree by the left leg while tied to the
            right wrist was a bottle contained a paper. The body
            was in such a horrible state of decomposition that 
            it was unrecognizable and he could not approach near
            enough to get the paper. The place is four miles be-
            yond the last settlement. WILLIAM FRED, who ran across
            the body, came to the city and reported the case, and
            the officers of the Marquette prison sent out a party
            to ascertain if it was not one of the convicts who
            escaped recently. There is no one else in this 
            vicinity missing.
