Menhennit, Deputy Warden of Marquette Branch Prison Died of Stab Wounds. FRED C. MENHENNIT, deputy warden of the Marquette state prison, and former captain in charge of the Mansfield mine east of this city, died Monday after- noon from the effect of wounds received in a riot of prisoners at the Marquette prison Sunday forenoon. ARTHUR MENHENNIT, his son, was dangerously wounded at the same time while Warden CATLIN received nine stab wounds and lies dangerously ill in bed but is expected to recover. The attack upon the prison officials was made by three life prisoners sent to Marquette from Detroit. They are ARTHUR HARPER, known as "GYPSY BOB", JASPER PERRY and CHARLES ROBERTS. The attack was incited by HARPER who had a grudge against Warden CATLIN. The attack occurred during the moving picture show. Warden CATLIN was sitting unarmed in the front of the room which was darkened to allow of the picture being shown. MENHENNIT and his son - the latter on a visit to the prison went to his assistance. The three convicts who attacked CATLIN were armed with stilletoes made from case knives. CATLIN and his two assistants battled the three convicts unarmed. None of the other prisoners interfered. There was consider- able confusion but no hostile move on the part of the prisoners and after the warden and his assistants in the melee had fought their way to safety the excite- ment was quelled by one or two of the armed guards. Captain MARSH was placed in charge of the prison by Governor GROESBECK, pending the recovery of Warden CATLIN. CATLIN received nine wounds. MENHENNIT and his son were stabbed several times. The three men were immediately placed under physician's care. Deputy MENHENNIT passed away on Monday while the con- dition of CATLIN and of ARTHUR MENHENNIT was pronounced critical. Monday Captain MARSH and Prison Clerk ANDERSON dis- charged EUGENE ANDERSON for failing to go to the assistance of CATLIN and MENHENNIT.
