Thursday, 15 February, 1877

         On the evening of the 9th, CHARLES SEYFORT and JOHN 
       OSCAR, residents of Stronach, Manistee county, went
       across Lake Manistee on the ice, to cut off the distance,
       instead of going around. They drove their horse with a
       cutter into a hole in the ice made by cutting ice for
       next summer's use. OSCAR was thrown out of the cutter,
       but SEYFORT clung to the vehicle and cried for help.
       The alarm was heard at the shore, and several persons
       went out and found SEYFORT insendible, but still in
       the cutter. He is at last accounts out of danger, but
       OSCAR'S body has not yet been found. The horse and
       cutter were rescued. Some indiscreet person sent word
       to SEYFORT's wife that he was drowned, and now she is
       lying at the point of death.
