         Manistee, Mich., December 2. - (Special) -
         JOHN CANFIELD, the foremost capitalist and lumberman of
       the section, died at 7 this morning after more than a year's
       suffering. In October, '98, he left for Detroit hoping that
       relaxation from business and change of climate would benefit
       his declining health. He left Detroit shortly before Christ-
       mas for Eureka Springs, Ark., and after remaining there six
       months with little improvement, returned to Manistee last
       June with the full realization that his life was ebbing
       fast and the desire to die at home. For the last month he
       was confined to his bed. Since his return home he took no
       part in business. Through integrity and attention to busi-
       ness affairs he amassed a fortune which placed him among
       the foremost of Michigan's wealthy citizens. The responsi-
       bilities of his vast interests have fallen on his son
       CHARLES, who inherits his father's business tact and acti-
       vity. JOHN CANFIELD was born at Landisfield, Mass., in 1830
       and settled in Manistee in 1850. A widow, one son, CHARLES
       J. CANFIELD, and four daughters, Miss NELLIE CANFIELD and
       Mrs. W. R. THORSEN of Manistee; Mrs. E. W. FROST, of 
       Wilwaukee (sic), and Mrs. E. H. EDDY, of Grand Rapids
       survive him.
