The building presents a fine appearance, and in many respects is well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. Several insane persons are kept here. The provision for these, though new, is hardly what it should be. Their cells are adjoining the apartment allotted to the females, and the noise and ravings of the more violent ones disturb the inmates of that part of the house. The building is warmed by steam. A change of keepers has recently taken place, and it is now conducted in a very orderly manner, and when visited by us the premises were in a neat and tidy condition. Among the paupers in this establishment we found one who had been supervisor of his town, and another who was formerly a super- intendent of the poor. =========================================================================== Abstract of the Reports Superintendents of the Poor State of Michigan, 1891 [41] Lenawee. - The poorhouse is located in the township of Madison. All buildings are in good repair. Facilities for bathing are two bath rooms, two tubs in each room, with modern fixtures for hot and cold water. Buildings are heated by steam and ventilated by windows. The treatment of paupers is kind and humane. Paupers are supplied with an abundance of plain and substantial food. Clothing consists of woolen in winter and cotton in summer. A competent physician is employed by the year to care for the sick. Have no accommodations for the insane and idiotic. The children are sent to the district school one-half mile from the county house. =========================================================================== Page 140 Biennial Report of the State Board of Corrections and Charities 1907-1908 LENAWEE Infirmary three miles from Adrian. An old, ill-planned, two story brick building with attic, the latter occupied by inmates. A detached building provides for a hospital for the old, infirm and sick. The water supply and drainage are good and there are fair facilities for bathing. The ventilation is very defective in the main building. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
