JAMES TURRILL. Hon. W. L. BANCROFT received a dispatch yesterday announcing the death of Hon. JAMES TURRILL of Lapeer, a gentleman well known in Port Huron, and one of the original Directors of the Port Huron and Lake Michi- gan Railroad. He it was who drove the first spike when the first rail of that road was laid. MR. TUR- RILL was born in Shoreham, Addison county, Vermont, September 24th, 1797. When twenty-one years of age he left his father's farm and engaged in the mercan- tile trade in Bridgeport in his native county, in which he was very successful. In 1835 he made a trip to Michigan and invested extensively in pine lands at and near the present city of Lapeer. He returned to Vermont and continued his business until 1842, when he removed with his family, consisting of his wife, and eight children to Lapeer. During the greater part of his residence here MR. TURRILL was a very active business man and had accumulated a large fortune. He was equally successful as a mer- chant, banker, real estate dealer and railroad pro- jector. He was several times president of the vil- lage of Lapeer, and upon its incorporaton as a city he was its first Mayor. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1848. MR. TURRILL was an earnest Christian and a leading member of the Presbyterian Church. He was in quite feeble health for several years before his death, but retained the powers of his mind and took active control of his business affairs up to a few weeks ago. He was nearly eighty years old. His wife, who has been an invalid for several years, survives him. His funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. [Transcriber's Note:] JAMES TURRELL was the grandson of EBENZER TURRILL and LOIS HALL. Son of DANIEL TURRILL and TEMPERANCE YORK.
