Palmer, who came to La- peer in 1831 with Alvin N. Hart, was born in Vermont in 1804. He moved to Ohio where he was engag- ed as a cattle drover for several years and then came to Detroit where he met A. N. Hart and joined him on his way to his new home in the wilderness. He worked for Mr. Hart for six years and then settled on a farm with his wife Diantha Merlin Palmer. Mr. Pal- mer chopped the trees off the first acre of land cleared in Lapeer County, the site of A. N. Hart's home.
