Turrill and his wife were accredited with being the third family to settle in Lapeer, and for many years they were outstanding members of the growing community. There is a record of the doctor being here as early as October 27, 1832. Hon. James Turrill, a brother of Dr. Minor Y. Turrill, came to Lapeer in 1836 where he invested extensively in lands. Sometime later he returned to Vermont for his family consisting of his wife and eight children and brought them to Lapeer. He dealt in real estate, in the cultivation of his large farms and for a time was a member of the banking firm of R. G. Hart and Co. and was one of the directors of the Port Huron & Lake Michigan Railroad, now known as the Grand Trunk. He aided the road with his means and advice when others were quite discouraged in getting it completed from Port Huron to Flint. He served at Mayor of Lapeer and as a member of the State legislature, during the sessions of 1848 and 1849. He was a man of strict integrity, liberal in his support of religious and charitable institutions, and gave with a free hand in the poor and needy. His daughter Emma became the wife of Shad N. Vincent, father of James T. Vincent, prominent druggist of this city at the present time
