        The Lapeer Democrat says that by the terms of an
      election bet SIDNEY BARCUME was to let THOMAS HOLMES
      kick him on the southern side of his anatomy and keep
      up the assault until the procession had gone across
      the street. The crowd assembled and the fun began.
      SID took his position on the brink of the gutter and
      TOM took a running start and fetched him a mighty
      kick. SID bounced about six feet out into the street,
      while the kicker lay down on the ground with one
      foot held fast in the slack of SID's trousers and
      his other leg trailing out behind like the rudder of
      a lumber raft, while SID kept right on at a 2:40
      stride, dragging TOM through the slush and dirt to 
      the opposite side, where the heat was to end. Here
      SID slack up a suspender, ran his hand around into
      the woodshed of his trousers and drew out a huge
      bear trap which had grabbed TOM's heavy boot at
      the first assault.
