Michigan Home for Feeble Minded & Epileptics
The Michigan Home for Feeble Minded and Epileptics opened its doors in June, 1895. The 1900 Federal Census shows an inmate population of 341. Also known as the Lapeer State Home and Training School, Michigan Home and Training School, and finally Oakdale Regional Center for Developmental Disabilities, by the mid 1900's it was the largest in the State of Michigan and one of the largest in the United States. After closing its doors in September, 1992, the buildings and 400 acres were sold to the City of Lapeer for one dollar and all but two of the buildings demolished. There is a cemetery on the property with an unknown number of burials.
The USGenWeb Census Project has the entire 1950 Federal Census for the Lapeer State Home and Training school online. Look for text files beginning with ED44-15 or ED44-27. They also have an index file.
