         MARTIN L. SWEET Dies a Garbage
           Burner of Grand Rapids.
           
         Grand Rapids, Mich., Feb. 22. - 
       From mayor of his city to attendant 
       of its garbage burner, from bank
       director to almost poverty, describes
       the career of MARTIN L. SWEET, who
       just died at the age of 81 years. From
       one of the leading personages of his
       city he slipped gradually down the
       scale until, obscure and unknown to 
       the rising generation, he worked for
       a daily wage in charge of the garbage
       crematory on the island.
         The deceased was born in New York
       state in 1819. After engaging in busi-
       ness in Chicago and other middle western
       cities he came to Grand Rapids and
       entered upon a long and bright career,
       but which ended so disastiously (sic).

         Funeral Services for the Late 
           MARTIN L. SWEET
           
         The funeral of MARTIN L. SWEET was
       held yesterday afternoon from the
       family residence, corner of Lafayette
       and Fulton streets, and was very largely
       attended. Many persons took advantage
       of the opportunity offered, and between
       10 a.m. and the hour of the funeral, 
       took a last look at the face of the
       man who in life had been so prominent
       a figure in the life of the city.
         The services were conducted by Dr.
       *** F. Bradley, former pastor of Park
       church, and the music was furnished by
       Miss Maud Staley and Miss Margaret
       Mulford. Interment was at Oak Hills.
