Died during the Japanese attach on Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941, where JOE had been stationed aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma. Survived by his parents; 1 brother, CHARLES; and 1 sister, BEVERLY. On the morning of 7 December, 1941, the USS Oklahoma was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, HI., when it was struck by several torpedos from attacking Japanese aircraft and capsized quickly. The attack on the USS Oklahoma resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including NIGHTINGALE. From 1941 to 1944 remains were recovered and interred as "unknown" in Hawaii. These remains were disinterred in 1947 and thus began the long process of attempting to identify the sailors who were killed in the line of duty on that day. The remains of JOE NIGHTINGALE were identified on 29 August 2019 and returned to Michigan for burial in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI., on 7 December, 2021. =============================================================================== Sources; 1940 Federal Census, Comstock Twp., Kalamazoo County, MI Tombstone: Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI WOOD TV 8; 7 September 2021 Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency
