MORTIMER FOSTER, a young man, aged 18 years, son of F. M. FOSTER, ESQ., of that city, left his home about two weeks since, and was acting as brakeman on a freight train, of which his uncle, MR. F. M. LUMBARD, was con- ductor, and early in the morning of the 26th ult., being thus employed, and the deck of the cars being wet and slippery with dew, he was in the act of braking the train, but having had very little practice in such em- ployment, his feet slipped, and he was thrown between and beneath the cars, and was caught in the brake under the train, and one of his legs crushed nearly to the body. He was picked up and conveyed to Joliet, as soon as possible, and amputation of the injured limb was per- formed as soon as medical aid could be procured; but he survived the operation but a few hours, though he appeared to revive after the operation until a few moments before he died, which was about 5 o'clock, p.m., nine hours after he received the injury. ===========================================================================
