Superintendents of the Poor
State of Michigan, 1892

        Iron. - County owns no poorhouse, poor farm, or county hospital.
     A private hospital in Felch township was designated a temporary county
     hospital and patients paid for by the month.  With the number of
     permanently indigent people in the county, it is the opinion of the
     superintendents of the poor that a poorhouse and farm would be an
     expensive method of caring for the poor.  There are practically no
     paupers in the county that are not sick.  Many of these are county
     charges for a short time only and are cared for at their boarding
     houses and homes until able again to take care of themselves.

                               IRON

        Infirmary two miles from Crystal Falls.  Is a two story frame
     building and since the last report has been enlarged so as to provide
     suitable quarters for women.  A heating plant has also been installed
     and with good water supply and bathing facilities the conditions have
     been greatly improved.
