           FIRE AT EAST TAWAS
           ------------------
        Threatened for a Time to
           Destroy the Town
           
        Bay City, Mich., Dec. 7. - A dispatch
      to the Tribune from East Tawas says fire
      started shortly after 9 o'clock last night
      in J. Felscher's millinery store and spread
      to Wrather & Rourk's hardware store. Anker's
      grocery and meat market was next ignited and
      from there the fire spread to the rest of the
      buildings in the block. The waterworks gave
      out early in the struggle on account of a
      breaking main and left the town unprotected.
        Calls for help were sent to Bay City and
      Alpena, the fire tug here being desired, but
      no call on the department to send a steamer.
      At midnight the fire was still beyond control
      and threatened to spread to other buildings
      and wipe out a large portion of the town.
      At 2 o'clock this morning a telephone message
      from East Tawas said the fire was under control.
      The loss will be about $12,000.
