M. Jenkins. This mine was opened last spring, but coal was mined here fifty years ago. The coal is a good quality. The average thickness of the vein is 28 inches. It is found at a depth of 35 feet from the surface. It is underlaid with a vein of fire clay 18 feet in thickness. Has a soft slate roof, which has to be planked, when the coal is mined from under it. Em- ploys nine men. Has a natural ventilation. There is also another vein of coal 34 feet below this one 2 1/2 feet in thickness, which it is claimed has a good roof. This mine is near the Cedar river in the town of Williamston, Ingham county. =========================================================================== Note: There were no accidents of any kind at this mine that were reported during this year.
