                             TOWNSHIPS
                             
       TOWNSHIP history is a special feature of this work, and the
     aim has been to present separately the leading incidents of
     each, embracing their early settlement, growth and present con-
     dition.  They are little municipalities, with their own govern-
     ments, societies and local institutions.  The good-natured am-
     bition of each of the townships to exel the other tends to in-
     crease the capacity of performance and raise the standard of
     excellence, without producing any other than the most kindly
     feelings.  We also give the histories of the villages and cities
     under the head of the townships in which they are located.  By
     referring to the index in the back part of the book, the page
     upon which the sketch of any township, village or city begins
     may be readily seen.
