Chapman Brothers, Chicago, 1884 [345] THOMAS B. WOODWORTH, Prosecuting Attorney of Huron County, residing at Caseville, was born Oct. 2, 1841, in Rose Township, Wayne Co., N.Y., and is the son of STEPHEN E. and RACHEL (BELL) WOODWORTH. His father is of English descent, and was born in 1815 and is now a resident of Champagne Co., Ill. He has been a merchant all his life. The mother was born in 1822, and died July 20, 1845. She was of Irish parentage. Both parents were born in New York. MR. WOODWORTH was but four years of age when his mother died, and he went to live with his grandfather BELL, in Cayuga Co., N.Y., where he remained until he attained his majority. He obtained his early education at the common schools of New York, and later was sent to the seminary at Cazenovia, where he was graduated in 1861. He then became a farmer on his own responsibility, and continued in that line of business until 1867, the year of his removal to Caseville. He interested himself in lumbering, in which he passed three years, and in 1870 was elected County Surveyor, in which position he officiated several years. He also served as Supervisor from 1868 to 1875 inclusive. In 1876 he was elected on the Republican ticket to represent his district in the Legislature of Michigan, and in the same year was admitted to the Bar of Michigan. He was elected to his present official position in 1882. MR. WOODWORTH was married Oct. 6, 1864, to GERTRUDE M. SMITH, and they have five children: PHILIP B. was born Oct. 19, 1865; PAUL, Sept. 3, 1869; ROBERT S., May 9, 1872; FREDERICK L., Jan. 8, 1877; GERTRUDE E., Nov. 12, 1878. The mother is the daughter of PHILIP M. and HARRIET (NICHOLS) SMITH.
