Eagle Sunday, July 17, 1966 GIRL FALLS INTO SHAFT Rescue Worker Unable to Find Trace of Victim. Calumet, Mich., July 16 (AP) - A girl fell into an abandoned mine shaft and vanished today in the heart of Michigan's rugged copper country. Four hours later, a rescue worker, lowered 60 feet into the pit, said there was no sign of 7-year-old RUTH ANN MILLER. RUTH ANN, daughter of MR. and MRS. EUGENE TAYLOR of Calumet, fell into the shaft about noon while playing with her brother, GARY, 10, near the shaft's opening. RUTH ANN is MRS. TAYLOR's daughter by a previous marriage. The mine is owned by Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. which was celebrat- ing the 100th anniversary of its founding when the tragedy occurred. Some 10,000 to 15,000 persons were attending a centennial parade and other festivities when the accident was reported by GARY. Some 500 persons gathered around the mine shaft, police said, as rescue workers fenced off the area and brought up a crane. The worker, lowered into the shaft by the crane, emerged to re- port there was no sign of the child and no answer to his calls. Michigan State police said the girl apparently fell through a small hole in a cap which covered the shaft opening. Rescue workers had to use drills to enlarge the cap opening in order to lower a man with the crane. Police said they do not know how deep the vertical mine shaft was but EARL GAGNON, of the Houghton mining Gazette, said "some of these shafts are 3,000 to 5,000 feet deep and partially submerged." "Some are as deep as a mile." he added. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
