HOUGHTON, Mich., Feb. 3. - Four men are imprisoned in the eighth and sixth levels of No. 3 shaft of the Tamarack mine, which caught fire yesterday and there is little hope of getting them out alive unless they can find shelter from the smoke and heat until rescued. They are PETER LEMPID, WILLIAM LEMPID, his son; JOHN TOMESKISKI, TONY TOMESKISKI, his son. The fire was discovered on the tenth level as the last batch of miners was being lowered into the mine at 7:30 o'clock yesterday. The alarm was given and the engines were soon hoisting cage after cage laden with men. As the last cage came up empty Mine Captain GRIBBLE called the roll and discovered the four men missing. Several attempts were made to reach them, but the heat and smoke drove the rescuers back. The air compressers were set to work at full blast with the hopes that air enough would reach the imprisoned men to keep them alive until the fire expends itself, as it has little to feed upon. Another rescue was attempted this morning. The mine will not be seriously injured. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
